A country song played forward [Jan. 31st, 2009|12:33 am]
[Current Mood | distressed]

I have had a really bad 6 months or so:

First I lost my dad (somewhat expected - and previous post)
Then my girlfriend dumped me (Extremely unexpected)
Then I lost my job
And now, I lost my cat. (unexpected - liver failure)

The one positive note I see is that the scale of pain is trending generally downward (with a very sharp peak at number two of course).

Besides that, things have been pretty neutral: Can't find a job, but still have a house and unemployment is livable for now.
I think this year I can really use distractions like Sakuracon.

A potential gain, a definite loss. [Aug. 9th, 2008|04:48 pm]

[Current Mood | sad]

Recently I started dating a girl, and things seem to be going well. She also works at MS, but in a different building from myself, and we generally see each other at lunch every day.

But that's not what prompted me to write to my LJ (a rare event indeed)

On Friday August 8, 2008, My dad died. He was 62.

My last life-status update was on Nov. 16 2007, so as might be expected some stuff has happened since then.

For one, Yes, indeed, on Dec. 29th 2007 I got a Niiikon camera. It's a really nice one by my standards - my first DSLR, which having a large sensor can take good pictures in more conditions then my older camera (see below)

And of course I used said new camera at Sakuracon 2008

Oh by the way, before the con I finally got around to hosting the pictures from Sakuracon 2007 but failed to mention it here. Sorry.

While at the con, I sold my old camera (the one that took the 2007 and 2006 and Thursday of 2008) pics, but decided I wanted a really small one I can just keep in a pocket. So I did some research, but then randomly discovered CHDK and that pretty much decided for me :-)
So now my every-day camera is a Canon SD870 IS (the newest one CHDK supports with a wide wide-angle and image stabilization)
(Canon should really thank those guys)

Other than that, my dad had briefly returned home, but now he's back in a nursing home. Still no luck romance-wise, Job is fine, etc.

[Current background noise |Random TV I'm not watching]

I've been single again for a while, so I figure I might as well finally write this.
Note, it is inspired by post I was planning to write years ago at particular person's request, but it is mostly for my own musings. As such I have not de-parenthesized it.
Lists are generally in no particular order besides English conventional. "Girl" here means human female, and is not used to mean "young" except as noted.

I like tall girls. And short girls. And those in between

I like thin girls, 'curvy' girls (It would be really nice if there was a non-offensive word for that) and "average".

I like blonds, brunettes, redheads, pinkheads, blueheads, greenheads, redheads, orangeheads... I do not prefer blonds who are naturally brunette, or other such combinations. If dye is used it should be used for effect.

I like North American girls, Asian girls, European girls, Oceanian Girls, South American girls, African girls, and if there are girls in Antarctica I'd probably like them too. (Yes, there is a slight particular order here, but individual variation is much greater of course)

I like girls between about 3/4 and 4/3 my age. (if I can tell)

Now - You may have noticed a pattern here, a trend of sorts.
What you may not have noticed is the difficulty this causes me when it comes to the traditional dating protocol.

I can't look at a room full of (female) people and see 'the one' that I want to ask out; they are all so cute. Furthermore, the clothing a girl happens to be wearing has a much larger influence on physical attraction at the moment I see her than any "inherent beauty"

If I tried to ask out 10% of the pretty girls I see in a day, I would never make it to or (especially) from work. (and I would die of exhaustion) so clearly I can't just randomly ask. Besides that, in reality girls who are compatible with me (which is really the important factors - I am including in it availability, non-smoking, location, personality, etc.) are almost certainly few and far between. Especially because I am only really interested in long-term.

So - How can I play the dating game?
Simple answer is, I can't. I have given up on the 'normal' method entirely. I will never ask out anyone who I don't know at least a little bit - it would be a waste of everyone's time.
This limits me to female friends (which I don't have a lot of - and most of them have already rejected me romantically) and online dating (which I am not good at - but I have at least made a few friends...)

That's pretty much it. This isn't a rant or anything, just observation.

Again! [Nov. 16th, 2007|04:26 pm]
[Current Mood |Mixed]

In Grand Old-Tradition, I am about to start a contract at MS - which means my dad is back in the hospital/nursing home system. (It seems I failed to note that he got back home a few months ago)

Anyway, he is not as bad off as the last couple times, and might be home when I actually do start (the 26th)

This contract will be in the Mobile Devices Made By Samsung team. Less evil than my last position. ;-)

When silence breaks, I fix it. [Oct. 14th, 2007|09:16 pm]
[Current Location |My mom's place]
[Current Mood | okay]
[Current background noise |nope.]

(My apologies to the Daily Show)

It's been over a year since my last post, that's what I get for waiting to post until I'm not "busy". Well, now is that time - my job at MS has ended, so I'm on the 100 day break - and I've been dumped by the girl I started dating about a month after my previous post (Funny that)

That and there was some kind of spontaneous file system corruption on my home computer (I'm at my mom's), so I am in the middle of backing up the files that remain and then I'll have to re-install. Decent timing if it had to happen though - there is a new version of my favorite distro coming out in a few days - I'll get to start off fresh with it.

So anyway, I need to stop failing to write and read LJ.

Other events in the year that was:

* I did wear the shirt to the fair (2006 - Right after that last post), I got a few looks, and one conversation, but nothing I would consider 'success'. I might try again at Sakuracon (2008) perhaps as part of my costume. Unless of course I am in a relationship at that point.

* My laptop died, at less than a year old. Unfortunately the serial number was no longer legible, and without that I could not get it repaired under warranty. Fortunately it booted one last time while I was on the phone with Acer and I was able to get the number from the CMOS.
As for how it died, while sitting by itself, the screen went funky, and after that it simply would not boot at all. I then noticed an indent in the plastic in front of the keyboard where it had started to melt. After some investigation I determined that this dip (which still got very hot whenever I tried to turn it on) was approximate over the GPU. One motherboard later (and a fiasco with Fedex) it was working fine and ready for me to restore the hard drive image I made before sending it in: sure enough, they had formatted it.

* I got a new "PDA": a Nokia 770 Internet tablet. It's like a UMPC that comes with Linux. It's not a phone, but has bluetooth which can connect to my (new) cell phone and get internet from there. (Or wi-fi of course)

* And an Archos 504 media player and recorder. This is a 40GB hard drive with AV in and out. It's a much better method of archiving shows from my DVR than VHS is. Also portable.

See you all next year... (hopefully also sooner)

The only winning move is not to play? [Sep. 7th, 2006|09:42 pm]
[Current Mood | pessimistic]
[Current background noise |Radio KOL (Actual music? First time ever?) http://www.radio-kol.net/]

The game in question is of course a lot less exciting than global thermonuclear war.

I refer to dating.

First, Some background. It is no secret that I am a member of a particular free dating site and also a free, browser based MMORPG So when I matched with a girl who's profile mentioned Kingdom Of Loathing, I naturally established contact and we soon met each other in-game. We chatted fairly regularly until she had a huge trip to Europe, and we noted that soon after she would get back there was a KOL real-life meetup in Seattle.
This happened on Saturday, August 26th - and we met in person there. So we chatted for a while, both with each other and with the other players there. One of them offered me a ride to various places I needed to go afterward (I took the bus to the event, which was at Carkeek Park) But I didn't need it: I actually happened to meet some other friends of mine who I hadn't even known played the game.

So on Sunday I hung out my normal bi-weekly gaming group and then Monday get home. And the girl I hung out with had written the following in her blog (referring to a statement in my OkCupid profile which has been slightly expanded since):

"Hey david, you know how you say girls should talk to you "if [they're] a girl who is looking for a boyfriend: Most girls who talk to me seem to find one quickly." I never thought that would be so true."

Excuse me a minute... /me Walks off screen )

What really bothers me about this is not the loss of a potential date (I never assumed I had that, and we are still friends) or the fact that she was referring to the same guy who offered me the ride; it was that I was in the same conversations she was with him and I didn't even notice them 'clicking'!

The "punchline":
I have always known that I was bad at talking to people, but to have it forcefully demonstrated to me that I can't even *recognize* good conversation when it is right in front of my nose is a painful blow.

I am seriously considering not even trying dating until I can find some kind of class or something to teach me how to converse with people (especially female people of course)

Annoyingly, the Puyallup fair is coming up, and it is the perfect opportunity to wear The Shirt (By the way, I got that made a few months ago, it looks pretty much like the image)

Tomorrow I will officially no longer live with my parents...

...Because my dad is moving out. He is going to live in an "Adult Family Home" due to his medical problems being just too much to handle by himself, or with only part-time help. He has been in nursing homes and hospitals since about November, and tried living back here at home a little while ago, but that only lasted about a week.
So I have a house to try and clean/clear out eventually.
(Not because I plan to sell it right away: I still get to live here, at least as long as he is alive, however he would lose his medical benefits for over a year if the house was just transferred directly to me.)

A slight update [May. 23rd, 2005|10:52 pm]
[Current Mood | annoyed]
[Current background noise |Silence!!!]

As some of you already know, I lost my job last Friday (the 13th actually) which is annoying, but at least now I have a chance to find one that I'm good at, or even actually like to do. And my replacement is someone I know is competent, so that's not a concern.

In other news, I had heard that Space: 1999 was bad, in the way of Try To Name A Scientific Principal They Don't Break Every Episode, but until yesterday I didn't really have a proper appreciation of how bad it was: even the TV couldn't stand it.
On Saturday, my dad found a couple box sets (numbers 2 and 4, with six episodes each) and yesterday we watched two episodes after I took my parents to see Revenge Of The Sith (Quick spoiler: The Wilhelm occurs early on, when a cannon explodes and someone is thrown from it)
Shortly after being inflicted with Space: 1999, the TV screen went dark (as in unpowered) and the sound died. Turning it off and 'on' did nothing, hitting it did nothing, so I went to bed. This morning I discovered that the TV won't even stay 'on' for more than a second - holding the power button makes a sound like a car turn signal: Click..click. Click..click.

At least I got better sleep than usual ;-)

Documentation of the impossible [May. 10th, 2005|11:44 pm]
[Current Mood | energetic]
[Current background noise |Stargate SG1]

A few months ago I came with with the idea to change the world. I am posting this now because there has been a technological leap that brings it a little closer to being something that can be built. The only problems now are that:

1. Every component is very expensive

2. It almost certainly can not work, there's gotta be at least a law of thermodynamics that it would have to break.

My idea is a box, probably with a metal exterior, that has an on/off switch, maybe a diagnostics display, and a power outlet. It would work by converting ambient heat into electricity.

By doing so it would cool itself and its environment, so during the summer it could be air conditioning that adds power instead of using it. During the winter if it's indoors it would suck power from the furnace and increase the heating bill.

Such a thing if it Did work would have all kinds of uses, I don't know yet what the minimum size would be, but if it's the size of a typical refrigerator then maybe it could power a small house. If car battery sized it could be a great power source for anywhere far from a a grid, such as camping, spelunking, invading, disaster relief, etc. a bunch of them might even make it possible to run a car without fuel (the highways would become very chilly) If it could be made the size of a typical cell phone battery then it could be the end of recharging, every small device could run on body or room heat :-)

Anyway, you might be wondering about that technological leap I mentioned. My box will use three main technologies, I'll call them A,B,C for now. A is something that is commercially available and has been for a long time. The type of B that I need is a fairly new development as far as I can tell, and I have only found one place that is really close to a version I might be able to use. C is exotic but less so every year: I've seem them at Fry's (different aisle from A).

Until now, there has been a big gap between the thermal limit of Tech A and the requirement of B, while C is expensive, but ready as far as I know. Suddenly, late last month news of a Huge leap in A came out, it will be available in sample quantities this August - not that I'll be able or ready to buy it then. To me this is very exciting, because I was counting on B improving more than seemed reasonable (or finding an alternative to A - at least partly, that might be possible too)

Anyway, all of this is likely moot: One thought experiment I came up with does a pretty good job of convincing me that it can't work:

Plug a heater into my device and place both in a perfectly insulated box. What will happen to the average temperature in the box? If it goes up, where is the energy coming from? if it goes down, where is the energy going? if it stays the same: Perpetual motion! (and if real motion is needed to convince you, then say the heater has a fan blowing hot air at my device ;-) )

Another related problem is that I can't think of a way that it could run at any less than 100% efficiency (that is, with every watt-hour of heat that is conducted into the box eventually leaving as a watt-hour of power) at least I also can't think of it running at More than 100%

Now to figure out Why it will fail, so far that part has eluded me... which is why I'm being paranoid. The fact that it has means that just maybe I'm onto something after all.

I speak of something that many have heard me rant about in the past. With any luck, No longer will I need to buy an item I've spent far too much money on over the years. Yes, I don't need any more Inkjet ink. From now on it's Toner for me (and I probably won't need more this decade)

I am now the owner of an HP Color LaserJet 5m (it's technically just a 5, but the previous owner upgraded it) and I spent what might be less money on it then I've spent on ink. It came with toner loaded, spare toner, paper, extra ram, and a simm to give it Postscript level 2 support, which Linux really likes. Also I got a couple external DirectJet boxes in case I want to set it up on a LAN by itself.

If any of you Linuxy people know how to do it, I'd like to password-protect my printer and share it with the world, to pretty much any friend who asks, over either or both of IPP or SMB - I've tried, but apparently it's not as easy as it ought to be

After a short amount of testing, I immediately smelled which part needs to be replaced first: the Ozone Filter - I wouldn't even know what ozone smells like if I didn't have my QuikLiter (the zappy thing)

[Current Mood | geeky]
[Current background noise |I love Lucy]

I haven't yet given an actual report of how the fair trip went, but I'll start with the events proceeding it. (and the results of them)

In short, On the day of the trip, everything went exactly as planned with one minor detour, and especially one thing before the trip started: I won an ebay auction I had been watching.

It all started when I decided that I wanted a better pda then my pitiful zire, so I set up an ebay search for "plam", as in plam pilot, plam trees, etc. (that way I would get listings that other people looking for correctly spelled items won't see)

Then I decided I could do better, so I used google to find all common misspellings of a word, and set up searched for all of them. One of them had a hit, and it had no reserve, was in good shape and came with extras. At this point I misread the ending time (it was PDT, not PM) and I thought it would end During the Weird Al concert, so I set up a bookmark to the ebay wap site on my phone's browser and set up a gmail gateway so I could get my e-mail from anywhere, and also set up a script to automatically send a text message to my phone on new mail.

Anyway, I later realized that it would end in the morning before we were going to leave.

So it did, and minutes before the end of the auction I put in my bid and watched as everybody else was apparently not paying attention...

And I won a Tungten E for $76, Tungsten E's go on ebay for about $150 and retail for $200, so I saved a lot of money on a missing "s".

I got my pda about a week later and it was a little scuffed up, but perfectly functional, I couldn't test everything (such as the multimedia stuff) until I got an SD or MMC card (MultiMediaCardCard?) for it, so I did that a few days later. Sorry [info]scarlt131, I tried to take your advice, but the Sandisk was at Least $20 less then every other card I saw, *And* has a rebate I should try and fill out - but I have tested it pretty well I think, it's been filled to capacity and then emptied several times now.

(the story of that trip is kinda funny in itself, 8 hours to buy two things (the other is a case for the tungten), but that's our tax dollars at work)

This thing truly is a small computer, I even have an on-board programming environment now. Technically all 'real' PDAs are (some even run Linux) but the stuff I can do with with mine really make it seem like it.

In fact, at some point I realized that the next SD card I buy will put the specs of my PDA higher then the initial specs of the computer that the one I'm typing on replaced!
(PDA: 126 MHz, 1GB SD (future), 32 MB ram
Ex-PC: Pentium 0 at 100MHz, 1GB HD, 8MB ram)

The only thing really missing is a way to get it on the 'net. That's impossible for now in any way short of using an IR link to a cell phone, a feature my phone lacks.

This entry is about the first of two relatively important things that have happened in my life recently, the second one most of you have may have already heard about, I haven't stopped talking about it recently (in person at least) The first is Much more significant:

I have a job!

In a way, I have had this job for years - even before my First job - but now it's official, and will actually pay money. My schedule is Mon/Wed/Fri about 4 hours a day (technically around 10-2 but it's Very flexible) I am working 50 hours a month at the same rate as my old job: 8.5 $/hour.
Today (Wed.) I had my first shift, it was spent at Fred Meyer. This job will have about the best commute I can think of.
The job title is something such as Home Health-care Worker and my client is my dad.
I'm actually taking the place of another worker that my dad had been provided, so the agency/state is saving money by hiring me instead.

As for planning, I have heard from about 4-5 people saying that they are going to try and make it, so it would probably be a good thing to set up something caravan-style, like last year. Anyone want to be the departure point? My place is kinda hard to find.

I think today's interview went well, but of course I can't really tell.

First of all, I have received no replies about going to The Puyallup Fair with me and family. To see Weird Al! Monday the 20th is only a couple weeks away!

And I have a job interview in three hours.

Event planning and a *related* meme [Aug. 20th, 2004|10:43 pm]
[Current Mood | hopeful]
[Current background noise |The Saint (and not Val Kilmer)]

Two big events in my life are coming up (in the same sense that Christmas is coming up for at least 364 days a year)

The sooner of the two is The Puyallup Fair: On Monday Sept. 20th, at 7 PM will be a performance by '"Wierd Al" Yankovic' (as mis-spelled on the Concerts page - but they got his URL right)

Anyway, I intend to do like last year and have my family and any friends who want to join us make a group trip there. If you are interested, then get in touch so we can plan.

The second event is very far away, but one of the memes floating around is applicable, so to help me choose a cos-play for Sakuracon, please tell me:

What anime/manga character do I remind you of and why. If you can't choose than narrow it down to two or three. Then post this in your LJ and see what others think of you.

[Current background noise |the usual.]

I just got my Seattle bike fixed, now when I use the front brake, the bike slows, and the rear brake is finally strong enough to make the rear tire lose traction if I slam it on. Being able to stop is kinda handy living where I do hill-wise.

Anyway, here's My D&D alignment? )

Sounds about right, that or "Category XII - The Friends' Friend" fit me I think. I know several "Hub"s and a few assorted other relations.

Job? [Jul. 17th, 2004|11:49 pm]
[Current Mood | hopeful]
[Current background noise |Classical (on the radio)]

On Friday, I had a job interview at Microsoft, I couldn't tell how it went (which is probably bad news) but I should find out within a couple days: they said that they would contact my recruiter. If I get that position, it would be testing a framework used to test Windows.

As far as conflicts of interest go, I like Linux a lot, but I have no illusions about it being usable as a primary OS by most people. It's simply not at that level. (I can imagine trying to teach my mom how to deal with This or this) Most people I know use Windows, and if I can help Windows be to better then I will. (In fact, I'm at my mom's and am typing this in Windows. Word's spellcheck is better then LJ's anyway)

My month so far [Jul. 13th, 2004|02:32 am]
[Current Mood | hot]
[Current background noise |Ugh. TV]

The month pretty much started with a shopping trip with my parents on the 2nd, which happened for several reasons, one of which being that on our last trip Dad and me had left a bunch of pop in my Mom's car trunk. Another reason was so that I could switch parents to my Mom for a while. Incidentally, on the 2nd at 10:12pm I noted that it was still light enough outside to read my watch. So very different from what it was like in CA a week and a half before (on the Longest day even)
Day by day )
So, In Recap
So far I have celebrated 3 birthdays, been to 3 parties, and
Every day that I spent with friends since the 4th, I have seen at least one friend from the previous time!
This trend is likely about to end though: Today I hang out with Ian and Probably won't see anyone from [info]quigoni's party.

TV [Jul. 8th, 2004|02:22 pm]
[Current Mood | pessimistic]
[Current background noise |"The worst show on television (according to TV guide)"]

For those of you who don't watch TV, you Really arn't missing much. My mom has no cable and no reception and it's just great to have some time away from it all when I'm there. My dad on other hand does not turn the TV off, at least not when home.

Anyway, a few months ago (April 9th) a comedian named Dave Chappelle aired a really funny parody of all the stupid reality shows that have plagued TV recently. His skit was titled "Trading Spouses" which is a take-off of a home improvement type show called "Trading Spaces". As per his usual style, it was meant to be a ridiculous notion - his previous skits have included for example a blind, black member of the KKK.

Then, not long ago, I start seeing ads for a new show coming to ABC: "Wife swap"

Now, in attempting to look it up, I see this. Fox's version even keeps the same title as Chappelle's skit.

On second thought I'll try to be original.

In other news, I am trying to switch to Firefox instead of Mozilla and for the most part it seems to be an improvement. (After enough extensions are installed.) A little instability regarding flash though.

and The Trip To See SpaceShipOne pictures are almost ready for me to post.

Also, I *might* be close to getting a (temp) job at Microsoft. This amuses me greatly.

EDIT
I first tried to post this from a firefox extension which is an LJ client, called "Deepest Sender" (it's an anagram of "Depressed Teen") But it very much messed up all the HTML and LJ tags.

Back! [Jun. 23rd, 2004|04:23 am]
[Current Mood | hopeful]
[Current background noise |Fans (both computer and not)]

Just got back from Mojave, CA where me, [info]otakunerd, and [info]naruvonwilkins watched the launch of SpaceShipOne - it was the first non-government manned space flight. For a better summery then I am going to write now, see Frank's entry
Pictures are slowly being sorted, will be online later.

Besides that, naruvonwilkins gave me a gmail (Google Mail) invite a while ago, and now I have a few of my own to distribute, so anyone who wants one, please go ahead and say so, and I'll subjectively decide who to give them to. I would prefer to trade one of them for an Orkut invite if possible (just to see what it's like - if it's like gmail then it should be great)

By the way, I hope to use that as my main e-mail service, so go ahead and guess my username.
(Yes, it's the same as here)

Picture Meme, new toy, and new website [May. 28th, 2004|05:00 am]
[Current Mood | pleased]
[Current background noise |Tennis]

Yes, it's late, but anyway...
"Take a picture of your feet in front of your computer. On your computer, display the picture of the picture meme that prompted you to do your own picture. Then post the picture you took."

Note the little silver thing in the bottom-left. That is my new toy, it's the optional camera that goes with my cell phone, so now I can take pictures of neat stuff I see randomly when I don't have my Real camera (or at least don't have it handy)

The same scene taken With that camera looks like this.

I was really surprised when I opened the box and saw how small that camera really is. Notice that it's smaller then my wireless keyboard/mouse receiver (the black triangle thing) and is even smaller the little roll of scotch tape behind my leg. (See!)

So now I can take a picture and upload it to the web immediately from anywhere. I started a "moblog" to post such pics to.

The camera has a fixed focus of about 4 feet, so anything close up enough to read is blurry, but there are ways around that: Such as this. That's the best self-pic of the camera that I have. I'll take guesses for what I did to get it that 'clear' - in relative terms anyway - at that distance.

Best under-$10 I have spent this month.

[Current background noise |TV]

Please fill this out in a comment to me, and post the questions in your own journal (if you haven't already) Anonymous comments are perfectly welcome, and although it will log your IP, I promise not to try and identify you from that (unless of course it's abusive or something)

1. Who are you?
2. Are we friends?
... )
32. Do you think our friendship is getting stronger/weaker/or staying the same?
33. Do you feel that you could talk to me about anything and I would listen?
34. Are you going to (or have you already?) put this on your LiveJournal and see what I say about you?

$20 [May. 15th, 2004|02:07 am]
[Current Mood | groggy]
[Current background noise |The Science Channel]

The subject line refers to an amount of money that I should be receiving in about a week for performing a civic duty: Jury Duty. I didn't actually make it on a jury, for the case that I was "pre-selected" for there were 50 people to fill the 13 seat panel (12 and one alternate) I was number 41.

I did take the opportunity to think of a horrible pun though: the pews they squeezed us potential jurors into were a bit small, it's the first time in my life that I've really felt peer pressure.

(not true at all)

I kept forgetting to photograph the terrible pun my mom constructed, I should do that next time I see her.
Speaking of which, I've already "spent" almost half the money I'll be getting: I ebayed for the camera that my phone can use. It costs $50 from sprint, and the under $10 on ebay is after shipping. Of course it will fit my coat pockets and I won't care if it's damaged/stolen (the reason I don't just always carry my 'real' camera)

I got one more thing from Jury duty, I spent a lot of time with Random People in the most true sense of the phrase, (they came from all over the county) and of course that is a perfect system to distribute virii. (so far just runny nose)
That's the only kind of virus that I'm really concerned about these days

[Current background noise |something on the background TV]

I found the "Make Web Image Gallery" command in one of the Linux image management programs, so now I have simple webpages as well as the old directory listings for Sakuracons 2004 and 2003 (2002 will take more work and I am about to go to bed)

Sakuracon 2004 thumbnails page 1 It actually linked to the movie thumbnails (on page 3) since they Are images, so I just changed the links to point to the movies themselves. and I added links to the two sounds that I recorded, under their associated pictures.

Sakuracon 2003 thumbnails (everything on one page)
